‘Get Paid Quick’ online tool wins NAWIC WA Innovation Award27 October 2017
Jackson McDonald Senior Associate Shevaun Stringer won the coveted Innovation Award at the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) WA Crystal Vision Awards Breakfast 2017, for her contributions to the Get Paid Quick (GPQ) tool developed by Jackson McDonald’s construction team.
The NAWIC WA Awards for Excellence are in their seventh year and showcase the achievements and industry advancements of West Australians and West Australian organisations in the construction industry.
Commenting on the firm’s success, head of the team behind GPQ, Partner Tom Jacobs, said it was an outstanding accomplishment for Jackson McDonald.
“This award confirms the passion and commitment of Jackson McDonald in driving innovation and constantly striving to provide our clients with the best possible commercial outcomes. To be recognised by NAWIC WA is something that the whole team behind GPQ are very proud of.”
GPQ is a cutting-edge web tool developed to assist clients in quickly and efficiently preparing and lodging a legally sound draft application for adjudication under the Construction Contracts Act 2004 (WA), which deals with payment disputes in the construction industry.
In a review of GPQ, Professor Phil Evans of the University of Notre Dame (Australia), who was also appointed by the WA Government to report on the operation and effectiveness of the Act, said that GPQ will clearly assist in the objective of the Construction Contracts Act to “keep the money flowing”.
Professor Evans also stated that GPQ also significantly addresses many of the issues identified in the 2015 Independent Statutory Review of the Act, which result in the underutilisation of the Act in the resolution of payment disputes.
GPQ impressed the NAWIC WA Awards for Excellence judges immensely, with the following comments being attributed;
“The use of Artificial Intelligence and online platforms has streamlined a process that has a significant impact on many people in the construction industry. This is an innovative use of new technology applied to simplify existing processes.”
“The Get Paid Quickly app is a game changer in the industry and will result in quicker submission and resolution of claims, and reduced insolvency statistics.”
“An excellent idea for streamlining adjudication applications and making recovery of unpaid progress claims more affordable and accessible to a wider sector of the construction industry. A great use of AI by a lawyer/law firm. Its potentially wider application may also benefit participants in the industry in the future. This provides an attractive offering to the firm's existing clients and potential clients so is also a powerful marketing tool and of significant value to Shevaun's firm.”
Winners at the NAWIC WA Awards of Excellence were selected from close to 50 submissions.
